There are plenty of hiking routes around Majorca, you can take a walk around the Tramontana mountains, or further north in Formentor and there are also some great routes up in the Serres de Llevant mountains too. During the winter hiking is the best way to keep busy and stay outside as the water is too cold to swim. However, it still stays fairly warm in the winter, enough to go hiking comfortably (15degrees average during the day). I’m going to explain about my recent hiking trip in Biniaraix!
How to get there
Barranc de Biniaraix is a small village(like super small) close to Soller. It’s actually located right in between Soller (the famous tourist town) and the mountain village of Fornalutx. It’s around 45 minutes drive from Palma and a bit of a steep hike up into the mountains.
It’s surrounded by the Tramontana mountain range, and a windy drive from Soller. Many people often miss the turning as the road is so tiny you can barely see it.
If you start to walk up towards Biniaraix you you will see a church, dedicated to St Philip of Neri and afterwards, at the top of the hill you will see a public washing area, this is where the walk begins.
Hiking the Barranc de Biniaraix
The level is probably medium and I’d say the full circuit will take you around 7 hours. The hike is actually part of a much bigger route(GR 221) which goes all the way from Puerto Andratx to Pollenca in the north. Barranc de Biniaraix is just a small section but probably the most beautiful part of this walk. There are some pretty steep sections of this walk but I wouldn’t say you need any special experience, just that you may have some muscle pain the days after ( I did!)
There are some lovely sights on this walk including olive and orange trees, huge caves and spectacular views of soller and the sea.
The full walk can last up to 7 hours and ends at the giant Cuber reservoir and reaches a maximum height of 950 metres ‘Cornadors’. Many people(and me) don’t want to go the whole way, but you can simply walk a couple of hours and then head back to Biniaraix and get a nice drink at the local bar. I did in total 2.5 hours but you could do a bit more or less depending on what you feel like.
